Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art from the aunt Denise. She worked as night nurses to afford her aunt to have the space she required during her day time to enjoy the pleasures of art, literature, and theatre. DuVernay was captivated by the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt recommended the film to DuVernay. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's example the power of art as an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay had an aunt who was socially conscious and taught her how to use the arts as a means of expression. DuVernay was a child living with family members in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the home and looking through the waste from one of the jury. Due to her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist right after college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Additionally, she started a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
